Ice climbing in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena
Varied climbing in icy surroundings
The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena around Ehrwald is a true paradise for outdoor sports enthusiasts of all abilities. Climbing in alpine surroundings is the motto here, at the foot of the Zugspitze. There are interesting routes in terrain close to the valley for sport climbers, as well as numerous multi-pitch tours, easy to high alpine hikes and, in winter, the opportunity for ice climbing. Of course, the range of sports on offer away from the rocks is almost unlimited. Whether skiing, cross-country skiing, winter hiking or simply relaxing in one of the cozy huts - there is definitely something for everyone here. And what you should definitely not miss out on: an ascent with the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn to the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany.
Ice climbing tips in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena for beginners and pros
- Grenzeisfall
The Grenzeisfall, over 250 m high and located directly on the border with Germany, leads up several steep pitches. Initially quite easy, the climbing becomes much more challenging from the 1st belay. You have to secure everything yourself. The approach is 10 minutes from the road. - Border crosser
A mixed icefall that has it all! Visible directly from the road, it takes about 15 minutes to climb up the steep forest slope to the 80 m high icefall. It is pure ice climbing up to the first belay, then mixed climbing follows until you can climb back up onto the free-hanging icicle. Abseiling is via the route. - Häselgöhr icefall
The 45 m high Häselgöhr icefall is very suitable for beginners, but should not be underestimated. The stream often carries a lot of water, which can make the icefall quite unpredictable. The ascent takes 10 minutes. There is a mixed route to the left of the icefall. - Seebensee icefall
Directly on the Seeben walls, where the sport climbing routes and the via ferrata lead upwards in summer, is this mighty, 230 m high icefall in winter. It is one of the most difficult and longest icefalls in this area and is therefore only recommended for climbers with good experience on ice! The descent is possible via the via ferrata or by abseiling over the icefall.
