Muttekopfhütte - living room in the mountains

Whether sport climbing, multi-pitch tours or via ferrata: at the Muttekopfhütte it is possible to hold the handle of your coffee cup in the comfort of your living room and ten minutes later hold the handle of the first climbing route.

The Muttekopfhütte high above Imst is world classwhenit comes to access. There are around 100 climbing tours within a 20-minute radius and the waterfall via ferrata is a scenic highlight of moderate difficulty level C. What's more, the rock there is geologically unique. All around the hut is conglomerate rock with wonderful holes. This type of climbing is rarely found anywhere else in Tyrol.

It doesn't get any steeper than this: 800 fantastic meters of climbing, some of which are very exposed, await repeaters on the Imster via ferrata. You climb along an exposed ridge on mostly natural footholds.

Which way is that? "After the easier passages in the lower part of the wall, there is this unpleasant section where you have to turn left around the corner." Really? I thought it was much further up! That's right, it was!

And even if you want to do the really big tours, you don't have to struggle with long "approach hacks". In around 40 minutes, you can be at the start of the "Plattenzauber" on the Hintere Platteinspitze, which is one of the longest routes in the northern Limestone Alps. Another great classic is not far away, namely the Imster via ferrata.

This leads up to the 2,632 m high Maldonkopf and has long enjoyed legendary status among Tyrolean via ferratas. Built in 1989, it was one of the first sports via ferratas in the Alps and the pioneering feat from back then is still considered a major challenge today. One test of courage after another with difficulties up to D awaits ferratists on the 800-metre route.

"Fear of heights therapy for the Åschaugschiache",

says Tyrolean Anna Konrad with a broad grin. The old dialect word translates as "Hinabschauscheue", meaning people with a fear of heights. Together with her friend Laura Wagner, she has just mastered the smooth key section, a climb into the void. The two of them have successfully completed the crash course in overcoming fear of heights.

Spettacolo That's how the Italians would describe it. A real box seat in the middle of the Imst via ferrata with the sugared main ridge of the Alps on the horizon.

Water music You won't find a more concentrated via ferrata experience than at the waterfall right next to the Muttekopfhütte.
After-work round A round of the waterfall via ferrata followed by a cool beer on the terrace of the Muttekopfhütte is a must for the people of Imst in the evening.
