Muttekopfhütte: climbing and feasting

Do you have overtime or heat-free days? Then simply take a weekday break from everyday life and climb up to the Muttekopfhütte in the Imst vacation region. Enjoy the finest rock at a refreshing 2000 meters above sea level and experience a micro-climbing vacation with a long-term effect - including a final climbing experience on holey rock and dolce vita on the "Mutte Terrace".

The ascent to the Muttekopfhütte sets the mood for the short break

The rock offer in the fresh mountain air covers everything from beginners to hard movers and makes both base climbs and multi-pitch routes possible. On really warm summer days, for example, the "Muttekopf climbing garden" above the Alpenvereinshütte is a great option. From early midday, there is shade and a gentle breeze that caresses the skin. On less hot days, you can check out the hole climbing on the east face of the Guggerköpfl in the morning. Always there in the summer months: sheep - black and white, which seem to graze on the alpine meadows according to a predetermined pattern, lie down in the shade for their midday nap at 12 o'clock, just in time to massage our brains with their rhythmic tinkling after their siesta.

Final feeling in Tyrol

Rock for beginners and experts at the Muttekopfhütte climbing garden

Definitely exceptional and a geological specialty: the conglomerate rock at the Muttekopfhütte. Beautifully compact and thanks to its many holes, at an altitude of 2,000 meters you could even imagine yourself in the Italian climbing Eldorado of Finale Ligure. Incidentally, you can celebrate the dolce vita afterwards at the Muttekopfhütte - the only thing missing is the sound of the sea. But instead, the marmots whistle, the jackdaws chirp and the aforementioned sheep tinkle in time with the herbs. The idyllic setting high above the valley makes the working day fly by. Climb up, come down, climb and arrive (at yourself) - that's the motto on a Mutte climbing day, which can easily go into overtime, there are so many climbing opportunities up here.

The view from the Muttekopfhütte

Climb until your fingers are long

A nice way to get closer to the hut, and perhaps to have a (inner) workout or two while walking: Take the Imster Bergbahn cable car only as far as the middle station and walk from here to the Muttekopfhütte in 1 to 1.5 hours. The path is well marked and leads uphill past alpine meadows, mountain pines and foaming, gurgling mountain streams - with the hut's destination always in sight. Once at the top, we recommend a first stop on the hut terrace. After refreshments, it's around 15 minutes to the sports climbing garden above the hut. The first sector is ideal for anyone who wants to practise lead climbing, for example, without fear and at very moderate difficulty. As you climb further up, the difficulties increase. The "Eisenhut" sector, for example, offers a nice mix.

The "Bloody Fingers" tour in the Muttekopfhütte climbing garden

The routes are all perfectly secured, only the "Happy Birthday Henkel" route is missing a bolt. Henkel" route is currently (as of June 2019) missing a bolt. Otherwise you can let off steam here from 5a to 7c on the finest conglomerate until your fingers are long.

Climbing garden Muttekopf hut

A total of 119 routes are available at the climbing garden above the Muttekopfhütte. Most of them are in the fifth and sixth levels of difficulty. But there are also 18 routes in the seventh and some in the eighth grade waiting to be climbed.

The orientation ranges from east to southwest, depending on which sector you are in. sector.

Dolce Vita on the terrace

Panorama on the terrace and delicious delicacies at the Muttekopfhütte

After a long day of climbing, you return to the hut satisfied and tired - if you are not afraid to descend all the way down into the valley (a good 900 meters in altitude), you should stay up there and end the day comfortably on the terrace. The panorama on a summer evening is too beautiful to miss out on because of the last train ride at 5 p.m. ... By the way, it gets really Italian when you order a "Panzanella a la Mutte", an Italian bread salad. The Tyrolean bacon dumplings are also to die for. The dumplings are made by hand up here by the kitchen ladies on the terrace during the day, even when the weather is nice. Rooftop instead of street food.

Arrival at the Muttekopfhütte

Tip: If you don't fancy long descents or if your knees hurt going downhill, you can stay overnight at the hut and take the first cable car in the morning the next day (e.g. from the mountain station, so you don't have to descend any meters). Alternatively, you can take a mountain bike or e-bike for the ascent and ride to the transfer point at the hut's material cable car. The trail is moderately steep, perfect biking terrain, so to speak. From the material cable car it is then only a 30-minute walk to the "Mutte".

Guggerköpfle: even more finale feeling, even more holes in the rock ...

If you decide to stay overnight, you should definitely check out the climbing on the Guggerköpfle the next day. Rough rock on gigantic holes provide a crazy finale feeling in the heart of Tyrol. On the Guggerköpfle you can climb both baseclimbs and multi-pitch routes (between 2 and 6 pitches). You are spoiled for choice. On the other hand: the days are long, so there's nothing to stop you from doing a few of the short multi-pitch routes one after the other ...

The rock is east-facing, so on very hot summer days perhaps better to take advantage of the cool mornings.

Spend the night

The best place to stay is the Muttekopfhütte, as you can set off from here in the morning and be there in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on your destination. You can make the reservation online, the confirmation comes quickly from the section, accept it and you have a bed on the mountain.

Life is a Rollercoaster

Great fun, not just for kids: whizz back down to the valley station from the middle station on the Alpine Coaster. The Alpin-Coaster is the longest summer toboggan run in the Alps with a whopping 3.5 kilometers in length and a difference in altitude of 500 meters. You can leave your climbing rucksacks at the lift and then glide down alone while the landscape and lots and lots of cows whizz past you ...
