The Bärenkopf climbing garden on Achensee offers challenging routes that are also suitable for sport climbing in the late fall when the sun is shining. Eva and Maggi report on their fall climbing:
The Bärenkopf climbing garden on Tyrol's largest lake
Fantastic late autumn weather and the desire to try something new again recently took us to Achensee, the largest lake in Tyrol.
We opted for the fairly new Bärenkopf climbing garden in Maurach for sport climbing, partly because it can be reached without a lift. The two of us set off around midday and reached our destination quite quickly and easily by car from Innsbruck. The starting point is well signposted - with a small (!) parking area right next to the Karwendel Camping site.
The approach to the Bärenkopf climbing garden at Achensee
The approach is not easy - so better check beforehand and don't forget anything! Make sure you have your helmet with you, as there is a sign indicating possible rockfall. It's at least 10 minutes uphill via serpentines to the lower sector. Incomparable fall atmosphere.
The way to Bärenkopf is worth it!
We were already impressed by the first tour on the Bärenkopf near Achensee: compact limestone, great holds, quite a few sandpits and caves - the rock is also still quite rough and hardly smeared. The distances between the bolts are well chosen, the route lines are logical and so nothing stands in the way of climbing fun.
In the lower sector there is one 4-pitch route, one 6-pitch route and four 5-pitch routes. We were particularly taken with the so-called "Johannis" routes. To make you smile - a funny surprise in the middle of the rock - be curious!
Endless views of the Rofan and Maurach - the Achensee is hidden from view from here.
And if you have enough strength and stamina, you can tackle the upper sector, where nine "sweet" 6-pitch routes await (actually called Bounty, Mars, Snickers...).
Our tip for climbing at Bärenkopf near Achensee
At this time of year, there is only sun in the mornings - so start early!
Have fun,
the Mauerfix Eva and Maggi
